January 16, 2015

I wanted to post about our experience today.  We were to meet our dear friends Troy and Jennifer (“the island people”) for dinner tonight and stay in Des Moines.  Jennifer let us know Monday that her dad, Ted Giorgetti, had passed away that morning.  We did not have the privilege of knowing Ted when he was whole but had met him a couple of times at Camp post-stroke.  Ted and his wife Evelyn spent many summers on their island (on 2nd Lake) prior to our arrival at Tall Pines Camp.  Pete and Donna, the former owners of TPC, had shared many great memories of summers with the Giorgettis.  Several of our guests have asked about Ted over the years, and I thought this would be a good forum to let them know that Ted is whole again.  Today’s service spoke of Ted’s love for Canada and fishing, and we were proud to represent part of his paradise and to be there for our friends.  Tight lines, Ted.

Happy 2015!

Happy New Year!  We hope your holidays were everything you expected and that your 2015 is off to a happy, healthy start.

We returned from 12 days in Florida last Friday.  It is now quite cold and we’re promised a lot of snow between today and tomorrow.  You know you’re in Iowa when…

I completed my 1st grade long-term sub position on Dec. 19.  It will be a while before I say yes to a group that young again.  26 1st graders is about 6 too many.  I felt more like a glorified (?) babysitter than a teacher.  There were a handful of really good, hard-working, independent students; however, most of them were very needy and seemed young/immature for 1st grade.

We are now focusing on the sports show circuit.  I added the schedule to our website today (  The page itself looks a little “wonky,” but I made sure the information is accurate and that the links to the show sites work.  Our schedule is the same as last year, except we traded Eau Claire (WI) for Tinley Park (IL).  Let us know if you think you can visit a show, and we’ll try to save you a few bucks for admission if possible.

If you haven’t sent your 2015 deposit or made your reservation, now is the time.  We need to know what vacancies exist once we start the shows.  Please do not “assume” you have your standard week or cabin if you haven’t been in contact; drop us an e-mail ( just to be certain.

As I mentioned, we just returned from a truly lovely vacation in Islamorada, FL (was it more lovely because I was done teaching?).  I put some pictures on my personal fb page but did not put any on the Tall Pines Camp page.  I’ll share a few of them here for my loyal bloggernauts and maybe add some to fb later.

I do love my lizards!  Here are a couple of great iguana shots:

We went deep-sea fishing with Kraig and Jenny one day.  The four of us had a blast!

Gruper caught a relative of a snapper:

We ate it…along with some yellow tail.  The local restaurant cooked it up for us:

We had it grilled, blackened and almondine–all three ways were fantastic!  I had fish or seafood for every meal down there–my idea of eating!  I had mahi mole (mo-lay) tacos,

ceviche almost as good as mine;)

and Jenny and I shared tuna nachos one day (she has the pic) as well as tuna tetaki.  REAL sushi is hard to top!

That’s about it for now.  I wanted to touch base, let you know we’re still here and gearing up for 2015’s season, and let you know that we hope to see you at Tall Pines Camp this year.  Take care.
